I found myself being taken back today, back to when I was a child and life was simple. It started with my need for a cup of coffee. I left my office, for the kitchen, and paused in front of the picture window in the living room. I saw the neighborhood kids in their various summertime activities. Several were riding their bicycles up and down the sidewalk, a few were playing hopscotch and jump rope. It made me remember what it was like to be a child in the summer, carefree and happy.
We lived on acreage just on the outskirts of town. It was the place to be. We had a trampoline, a sprinkler and so many places to hide for a game of kick-the-can. There was a row of wood storage sheds on one side of our property, and though full of various “treasures”, these sheds proved to house the best hiding places. I am sure I spent more time in them that summer than I did in my actual house.
It seemed the kids would come and go, basically from sun up to sun down. Thinking back, it never really seemed to bother my mother that there were always extra children there. She never had to worry where we were or whether we were getting into trouble. She always had homemade cookies or Kool-aid popsicles ready for us when we were famished from all of our playing.
As I passed the window, leaving the kids to their fun and games, I felt a sudden sadness at how fast-paced my life seemed to be now. I was wishing once again for the simplicity of my childhood and the content feeling of a perfect summer day with my friends.
